With a large swath of the country stretched out along the beautiful Adriatic coast, Croatia is a bit of a hidden gem. Rich in history and character, it’s a perfect summer destination whether you’re looking for up-tempo vibrancy and excitement, peace and tranquillity or hiking in spectacular natural parks, while in winter there are wine festivals and charming Christmas markets to explore.

Croatia’s shimmering islands are a haven for sailing and island hopping. Yachts and motorboats can be chartered with or without a skipper, serving all levels of skill and experience. Alternatively, if you prefer to mingle, join others on a small cruise ship and choose from luxurious relaxation and discovery tours, cycling and hiking or simply party your way around the islands. Each island has its own individual style, from nightlife to romance to family-friendly.

Some of the best party islands are Pag, Hvar, Rab and Brac. Pag’s Zrce Beach plays host to Hideout – one of Europe’s leading electronic dance music festivals, with five days of beach and boat parties. Pag is also the source of the popular artisanal sheep’s milk cheese that bears the island’s name. The neighbouring island of Rab is a little less crowded and there’s always something happening. Hvar, the sunniest place in Croatia, is a premium party spot for the larger budget. It also boasts lush fields of aromatic lavender in the summer months. Brac’s white sandy shoreline was voted World’s Best Beach in 2019.

Notable cities along the Dalmatian part of the coast include Split, with its well-preserved Roman architecture that gives the city a real Italian feel and Dubrovnik, famed for its Medieval walled city. Both locations are UNESCO World Heritage sites and, with their narrow streets and tucked-away bars and cafes, are ideal for a romantic getaway or dream honeymoon. When visiting Dubrovnik’s historic centre in high season, set the alarm and go early if you want to avoid the crowds and heat.

If the great outdoors is your thing, then Plitvice Lakes National Park, another UNESCO site, is for you. Featuring spectacular turquoise lakes, crystal clear waterfalls and wooden boardwalks, this stunning park can be reached by car, bus and train. Bring sturdy shoes and either pack a picnic or dine at one of the park’s café bars and restaurants.

With so much more on offer, whatever you’re seeking from your destination, you’re sure to find it in Croatia.
